http://detstvoto.stage.bg/

http://biblio.stage.bg/

Decide Your Destiny!

What was meant to be a 150-words-homework-for-the-Uni-narrative-essay-on-a-favourite book stretched out of control to the following almost-1500-words-gamebook-nostalgic-memorabilia-tribute-article…

You could hardly hear the train clattering on the rails. As a matter of fact with all those kids shouting, laughing and singing all over the car you could hardly hear even your own thoughts. They were all older than me. I was still in kindergarten and they were all students. But they were my father’s students! And I was fortunate enough to join their summer camp that year. We were on our way to the seaside. It was one of those old train cars with no separate compartments, where you can see everybody and walk around… Dad was chatting with his colleagues, some of the students were playing cards, chess or simply arm-wrestling, some were listening to music, others were walking around and enjoying all those simple pleasures you get on the train, like sticking your gum under the seat, or spitting out of the window… But not me! I had a far better occupation!

I was choosing my destiny!
Two of the guys had a bunch of books with them… Colorful covers illustrated with knights, dragons, ninjas, goblins and all sorts of things that can set your imagination on fire and make you crave for adventures! Those were the first gamebooks I had seen.
Above the title there were captions such as “YOU are the hero in this book!” or “Choose YOUR adventure!” They were all written in 1st person. They were divided into “episodes” and at the end of most of them there were choices to be made – “You finally reach the crossway. If you want to turn left read 37, if you decide to go right read 64, in case you continue forward read 11, if you prefer to go back where you came from read 59”
WOW!!

The rest of the world had known them for years, but they were something completely new for the Bulgarian kids in the beginning of the 90s. We had no idea about Role Playing Games, never heard of “Dungeons and Dragons” or such, most of us didn’t have PCs but even if you were one of the few lucky fellows – the graphics in those 5,25’-Floppy-Disc days could hardly compete with the adventures described in the gamebooks.

I was trying to spell from my space and dinosaur encyclopedias ever since I got an idea about the letters. But in the beginning when my parents bough me my very first gamebook, “The Castle of the Goblins” (“Замъкът на Таласъмите” от Колин Уолъмбъри / Любомир Николов) my reading was still kinda slow, so it felt much more enjoyable when others were reading aloud for me and I was taking the decisions. It must have been 1992, because I remember that dad bought me my second game book, “The Master of Darkness” (“Господаря на Мрака” от Джордж М. Джордж / Георги Миндизов), just before he took me to the cinema to see “Jurassic Park”, and “Jurassic Park” came out in 1993 - the year when my bro was born and I started school. In school my reading got a lot better and I would spend many nights reading gamebooks till late hours.

I virtually grew up on those books and they were the reason for me to get interested in literature and get my first library card. So no wonder that I was really pissed off when my literature teacher in secondary school claimed that gamebooks cannot be classified as literature by any means. Boy was she wrong!

What had inspider me to start reading now inspired me to start writing. I was making up my own gamebooks - writing adventues in notebooks and even occasionally borrowing my aunt's typewriter. When I was 9th grade, at the age of 15 the "Fantasy Factor" magazine published my article "The Gamebooks: A cult of a whole generation" as a main topic of issue #8 and I was so mighty proud and happy that I bought a box of chocolate candies and gave a little treat to my classmates in high school :)
* * *

There were both Bulgarian and translated foreign gamebooks on the market. Among the best translated titles were Steve Jackson’s Sorcery series and also his world-famous collaboration with Ian Livingstone – the Fighting Fantasy series.

The very first Fighting Fantasy book, “The Warlock of Firetop Mountain” was actually published in Bulgaria as number 3 as “Магьосникът от Огнената Планина”. I remember the day I saw it in the bookstore down the street. They sell snowboards and sportswear there now, but back in those days it was a great bookstore, filled with the smell of coated paper and fresh-printed ink. I begged my mom to buy me the book and I was jumping with joy when she agreed. Instantly it became one of my top favourites! A couple of years later I gave the book to one of my classmates. He didn’t return it for moths and I was about to use my fists in order to persuade him to give it back. I was heartbroken when he told me that he had lost it and offered me some money to cover the loss. But it was a loss you cannot cover. The book was rare and out of print for years! I searched for a copy everywhere but I couldn’t find one.

Some years later, on my way back from school I stopped by a second hand book stand. It was a religious experience! I went through a heap of gamebooks and suddenly there it was!! “The Warlock of Firetop Mountain”! My heart was pounding in my chest, I could hardly believe this miracle! But… but I had no money. It wasn’t expencive, it was just that my pockets were desperately empty! I was holding the book in my hands and I felt that if I leave it there for even one day I may never see it again. What if I come back tomorrow and somebody else have bought it? I couldn’t stand the thought of losing the book again. I looked for the seller. I saw him sitting on a chair behind the stand. He was an old, blind man. Iremember that I had seen him from time to time on the bus on my way to school. I went to him holding the book and asked him to give it to me even though I couldn’t pay. I promised that I will come back as soon as I can and pay, but he didn’t want to listen my promises. He just said “Ok, you can take it”, and I think he smiled slightly. I was so happy! I runned, no, I flied home!

I’m not sure, but I think that the next day I went there again and the stand was closed. I went there again and told the man “Maybe you don’t remember me, a few days ago you gave me a book and I came to pay for it…”. "I remember” –he said and I think that again he slightly smiled. “I knew that you’re an honest boy”. And I gave him the coin… I will never forget it – the bland man who was selling books and the trust he had in me.

* * *

In the years to come the gamebooks became bestsellers, they developed and evolved in various ways, new rules were coined, thew ideas were explored, there were several publishing houses which focused especially if not only in this field. New titles were printed every week. Stories from every genre from fantasy and science fiction action adventures to horror and detective stories and even historical and sport gamebooks.

The Bulgarian gamebook writers were sort of celebrities now (you can’t even imagine how happy I was when I got “The Castle of the Goblins” and its two sequels signed by the author Liubomir Nikolov at a convention in Plovdiv). We fans found out that they were using pen-names because in the beginning some policy was forbidding them to use the gamebook pattern as if some foreign publisher owns the rights to the idea. So our Bulgarian publishers found a way to get around this rule – they pretended that they publish only translated gamebooks! And by the way American authors were selling better, especially in the beginning of the 90s, when we had just abolished communism and our society was hungry for “decadent western culture”. The authors were hiding behind their western pen-names. Later on things changed and they could use their real names but the pen-names had become a tradition – they continued to use them even after they uncovered their real personalities.

For some reason the gamebooks’ golden age faded away and I can’t help it but get nostalgic talking about this. They are no longer being published (or at least not in Bulgaria). Some of the kids these days have heard about them from their older brothers and sisters or maybe even have read/played a book or two. You can find dusty volumes at second hand book shops. Fantastic adventures awaiting on forgotten shelves. And if by any chance you happen to find some of these books… do not hesitate! Take it. Turn the page over… and Decide Your Destiny!

Star Wars: The Clone Wars - The Way of the Jedi (Decide Your Destiny #1)

Star Wars: The Clone Wars - The Way of the Jedi (Decide Your Destiny #1)

Have you ever wanted to be a Jedi Knight? Well, here's your chance. From the chambers of the Jedi Temple you can travel to the forests of Kashyyyk and fight alongside the mighty Wookiees, or you can fly through space and battle bounty hunters in your starfighter. With dozens of paths to choose from, and over twenty-five different endings, there will be a whole new adventure waiting for you with every read.

TheForce.net: http://www.theforce.net/books/reviews/r_wayjedi.asp

Expanded Universe :)

Top 3 video games I want to see on a big screen

OK, so I did top 3 about comic books, now it's time for the video games. The rules - the games shouldn't have any adaptation on screen - no cartoons, no movies, no nothing. And the games should not be based on comics or something else, cause otherwise they should be in the other Top 3 (like "Cadillacs and Dinosaurs"). And I have to tell you that I can't really rate teh games and these number 1,2 and 3 are JUST numbers, I can't say which one I like better and which is the best for me...

3. Syberia

Benoit Sokal's "Syberia" is an interactive movie by itself, with complex characters, a lovely visual style and soundtrack that adds a great deal to the unique atmosphere of the game.

2. Full Throttle

Back in the good old days Lucas Arts did some really amazing not-Star-Wars-related stuff, most of them adventure games based on the SCUMM engine. And they surely have plenty of stuff I wanna see like animated movies or motion pictures, they've got Maniac Mansion and Day of the Tentacle, Zak McKracken, Monkey Island... But they are more cartoonish and I think that they'll be appreciated mostly by the fans. And "Full Throttle" is something that really ROCKS, literally! The beautiful animation, biker gangs in a postapocalyptic future, born-to-be-wild storyline about freedom, brotherhood, honor and justice and the superb heavy sound of The Gone Jackals who did the songs for the game...

Some time ago I even downloaded a Full Throttle movie, edited from the cut scenes of the game and some gameplay footage! You can still get it from here I think - http://www.gamershell.com/news_27175.html

1. DUKE NUKEM

Alien bastards come to Earth, steal our chicks and do some more nasty things, and the most kick-ass game character ever is the one to make them sorry for messing with our planet and quote some B-movie one-liners! A huge variety of huge guns, plenty of ugly mutants, monsters, aliens and plenty of other things to shoot at, blow up, kick, blast, destroy, anihilate, shrink and step on, half-naked chicks, naked chicks... This game is just BITCHIN' GREAT!!

And after "Duke Nukem: The Movie" it will be "Serious Sam: The Movie", starring The Rock as Sam "Serious" Stone, and then we'll do a crossover and we'll have "Duke Nukem & Serious Sam" with cameo appearance the guy from "Doom", Freeman from "Half Life", Lara Croft and the guy from Castle Wolfenstein... Hell yeah!

Animation #15

Before I begin my review, let me say that I am not really familiar with the Turok comics or video games. So if you're a Turok fan you may feel that I lack the background knowledge on the history of these series. But I'm a huge dino-nerd anyway.

The story is really quite simple - one day Turok and his brother encounter warriors from an enemy tribe, and defending a girl from their village (Turok's brother future wife) they get into a fight. Turok goes berserker mode and slashes through the enemies... and his brother. In his rage Turok almost kills his brother and the shaman of their tribe sends him into exile. Some 16 years later Turok is asked for help by his brother's son. Turok seems grumpy for being casted away and refuses to take part in the action. But later the boy returns and brings news that his tribe is almost wiped out. Turok takes his tomahawk and goes to help his bro, only to find him almost dead... and he eventually dies after he asks Turok to swear that he will take care for the boy and his mother. Back to the village the leader of the aggressors recognizes Turok's tomahawk - it was his father's and Turok took it years before at that battle in the beginning of the movie. The bad guy wants to avenge his father's death and goes on a rampage, trying to kill Turok. Going through a cave the Indians find themselves in The Lost Land (quite like Arthur Conan Doyle's Lost World) - where dinosaurs and prehistoric mammal beasts coexist with savage hordes of "The Missing Link" or something (you know, some huge ugly hard-to-kill humanoid hulks) and Indian tribes. The battle continues...

There is not much of a dialog. No memorable quotes, no one-liners. I feel that the characters are somehow flat, they lack emotional depth and motivation. No inner struggle, no inside conflict. And no comic relief.

The quality of the animation is above average, but far from great. Nothing you haven't seen - no innovative style or some recognizable character design. It's not bad, it's OK. And there are some nice looking Indian chicks :) The backgrounds are not really detailed, but on the other hand - what's there to be detailed? Rocks and cliffs? The dinosaurs are OK, but they lack color nuance and shading. And so do the characters in some scenes. And I forgot to mention - there is not a trace of some fancy 3D CGI cell-shading stuff, which I find good - old fashioned 2d works just fine for me. The only thing that seemed crappy were the computer generated flames for the fire effects in some scenes.

There's plenty of action, gallons of animated blood and even some cut-off limbs. But that will only shock you if you've been watching Bambie all your life. The blood and the battles are no match for a good anime style fight, where everything is presented with some wicked camera angles, fast movements and dramatic pauses. There's an attempt for a showdown at the end of the movie, but it doesn't really work out like in the spaghetti westerns.

All in all - the movie is worth watching, it has its moments, but it could have been much more. I enjoyed it because we rarely have the chance to see something more mature oriented and not-anime. If you're a fan of Ralph Bakshi's "Fire and Ice" or the "Heavy Metal" animated features I encourage you to check this one out, just keep in mind that it doesn't manage to entertain at their level. Somehow it lacks atmosphere and couldn't really captivate my imagination the way Filmation's "Flash Gordon" does for example.

And if you're a dinosaur/comic/video game freak I'll advice you to get your hands on the "Cadillacs and Dinosaurs" animated TV series based on Mark Shultz's "Xenozoic Tales" and "Cadillacs and Dinosaurs" comics. That's the real deal!

The Web #18

This one is one of my bro's net-finds. When I was his age I had no internet access at home, I had no cable TV, and I was yet to get my new PC... and now this kido gets stuff for granted an has more spare time to waste on the net and geek out. So one day he says "Yo, bro, check this out!" and plays for me some video on YouTube... It was the 1st episode of the IRATE Gamer Show I ever saw and boy I laughed and enjoyed! Some dude playing oldeis on his NES, pulling out one-liners and some visual effects and the result is...

http://theirategamer.com/
http://www.youtube.com/irategamer

I'm a fan of this guys! Me and my bro stay tuned for the next episode and when it comes out...
"Oh boy, I remember this one..."
"Yeah, a hell of a game it was!"
"My fingers got numb playing this for two weeks in a row..."
"They used to throw on you a shitload of enemies on the 7th level"
"I wanna play it again!"
"Yeah, kick some bad guys..."
"Any idea where's the notebook with the NES passwords?"

Check out that show, if you've ever been into some retro video games (like Tetris, Dr.Mario or Contra) you'll like it for sure :)

Ash - Clones (V.2 - Republic Commando)

Games #6

DELTA LEADER IS DOWN.... ummm, can I be in charge now?".

Games #5

Today I'm going to present you a cult classic from "Blizzard". Yup, they certainly have delivered some of the most successful games in the history. But I've never been a StarCraft/WarCraft fan, neither single nor multiplayer. So let's go back to 1992, when

"The Lost Vikings"

came out. Now, that's a game I cam play anytime! The story begins with a short presentation of our heroes - three courageous vikings are hunting in the snow covered woods near their village. Each one of them has unique skills - Erik The Swift can run faster than the other two, can jump, and can bash through some walls (and even some enemies) with his helmet; Baleog The Fierce can kill enemies with his sword, or from a distance with his bow (and infinite supply of arrows). The bow can also be used to hit switches from a distance; Olaf The Swift can block enemies and their projectiles with his shield, use his shield as a hang glider, or as a stepping stone for Erik to enable him to reach high grounds which is not possible without the shield. They get back from the hunt, go their houses and their families, night falls... and a huge alien spaceship emerges above their home village!!! Soon the three friends find themselves kidnaped by the intergalactic evil-doer Tomator, who intends to put them behind bars in his zoo! Well, our guys don't give up so easy and your work in the first levels is to help them get free. Finally they manage to escape through some kind of a warp, which happens to be not just an ordinary warp, but a time warp... and here we are, our vikings are lost in time! And chased by aliens. Various worlds with great level designs (prehistoric, ancient Egypt, and so on), through each one of the levels you have the funny dialogue between the characters and the groovy background music to keep you entertained even when you think what to do. Because there's alot of thinking! Usually there is only one possible way to reach the end of the level (and get the password, cause back then we had no save game) and in order to succeed you had to combine the vikings' skills in various ways, swich between them in the right moment...

Some years later there was "The Lost Vikings II", developed by Interplay. There were some new characters - a dragon ad a werevolf, who helped from time to time. And the vikigs got some cybernetic boosters (hehe, Baleog even got a lightsaber!). But all in all the concept of the game remained the same.

Throughout the years the games have been released for PC and various consoles, and in 2003 a GBA version came out. So in case you wanna try 'em out - just search around the net, they are easy to find for DOS and like roms with different emulators.

The Web #11

And taling about Monkey Island here's the ultimate source:

Games #4

Sure you've heard of Monkey Island, right? Yeah! And what about Blood Island? Well, that's one of the islands around. And now it looks like a new adventure is going to take place there. But not an official one, created by LucasArts, but a fan-made one.

So here it goes: Goblin's Blood Island El Grande

I hope someday in the near future we'll be able to check it out and play it :)
