Жорж Мелиес – пионерът на фантастичното кино

Но как започва всичко?
На 28 декември 1895, в Salon Indien du Grand Café, Париж, братя Люмиер правят своята историческа първа кино-прожекция – 10 кратки филмчета, с дължина не повече от 50 секунди всяко изненадват, шокират, стряскат, разсмиват, удивляват и развълнуват публиката. Сред зрителите е и един млад илюзионист, 24-годишният Жорж Мелиес, който запленен от видяното веднага след прожекцията опитва да склони братя Люмиер да му продадат кинематографично оборудване. Уви, те отказват, но това не обезкуражава Мелиес – не след дълго той се сдобива с камера, произведена от британския техник и изобретател Робърт Пол. Едва ли дори самият Мелиес е подозирал тогава, че през следващите 18 години той ще режисира 531 филма с дължина между 1 и 40 минути!
Първите филми, подобно на тези на Люмиер, са порсто филмирани сцени от живота около него. Техни прожекции Мелиес включва като част от програмата в своя театър на илюзиите. По-късно той започва да филмира самия себе си на сцената докато прави различни трикове и фокуси.
Но за разлика от братя Люмиер Мелиес не смята, че камерата е средство, което просто запечатва, запазва и документира реалността. Той иска да превърне камерата в средство за бягство от същата тази реалност. А кой би могъл да осъществи това бягство по-добре от един фокусник, илюзионист и мечтател?
През 1897 Мелиес основава студио на върха на една от сградите в предградието Montreuil, Seine-Saint-Denis в покрайнините на Париж. Това е първото кино-студио в цяла Европа! В много от запечатаните на лентата истории ясно личи театралното начало на Мелиес – актьори от неговата трупа разиграват различни сюжети сред изрисувани декори, а напълно статичната камера улавя движенията им, често пресилени и карикатурни.
Мелиес планира всичко внимателно - от композицията на сцената, през движението и жестовете на своите актьори, подбира сценичното осветление, решава художественото оформление на декорите си. Мелиес първи започва да използва концептуални рисунки и сторибордове, за да визуализира пред екипа си своите фантазии и да им даде ясна представа какво иска да види като краен резултат запечатано на кино-лентата.
По-малкия брат на Жорж, Гастон Мелиес, отваря офис в Ню Йорк, където по богат каталог с преведени на английски филми започва да разпространява филмите на студиото в САЩ. От този момент нататък Жорж Мелиес започва да прави по два негатива на филмите си, като единия е предназначен за Америка. Освен всичко друго, Мелиес е и бизнесмен и осъзнава важността и възможностите на един нов голям пазар за филмите си.
Той също така прави експерименти и със самата техника – заедно с двама от своите инженери проектира своя собствена камера. Първия прототип, който конструират тежи близо 35 килограма.
Често филмите му са почти лишени от история – целта им е да се експериментира с триковете, които са възможни в киното и да се покаже техният ефект на екрана. Когато визуалните илюзии биват усъвършенствани Мелиес ги прилага в разказваните от него истории.
Един от тези филми днес се е превърнал в символ на фантастичното начало в киното – небезизвестният шедьовър „Пътуване до луната” (“Le Voyage dans la lune”). Историята, разказана от Мелиес е вдъхновена от неговите колеги, пионерите на научната фантастика в литературата – Жул Верн с неговото „От Земята до Луната” и Хърбърт Уелс със „Първите хора на Луната”. 14-те минути, прожектирани със стандартните за онова време 16 кадъра в секунда, са изпълнени с иновативни специални ефекти, монтажни трикове и анимация изумяват публиката навсякъде, където е прожектиран филма.
Емблематичната сцена, в която изстреляният от Земята снаряд-ракета се забива в лицето на луната се е превърнала в част от съвременната поп-култура и икона от зората на научната фантастика. Queen включват сцени от филма в клипа на песента “Heaven for Everyone”, а през 1998 телевизионната поредица на HBO „От Земята до Луната” прави паралел между визията на Мелиес и последната мисия на програмата Аполо, Аполо 17.
Мелиес е убеден във финансовия успех на „Пътуване до Луната”, но уви – за беда техниците на Томас Едисон правят тайно копия на филма и го разпространяват в САЩ – самият създател на филма не печели нищо от американските прожекции, докато Едисон трупа цяло състояние на негов гръб.
Други заглавия от филмографията ма Мелиес, които черпят сюжети от приключенската и фантастичната литература са „Пътешествията на Гъливер”, „Невъзможното пътуване”, „20 000 левги под водата”, „Барон Мюнхаузен” и още ред други. Мелиес не пропуска да филмира и класически детски приказки като „Пепеляшка”.
„Le manoir du diable”, чиято премиера се състои на 24 декември 1886 е считан днес за първият вампирски филм, както и за първият филм на ужасите изобщо.
Мелиес става основоположника на Атракционното кино. Сред триковете на екрана са изчезващи и отново появяващи се обекти, предмети, променящи формата си, двойна и многопластова експозиция, анимираните кадър-по-кадър обекти и още много други. Във филма „Човекът-оркестър”, Мелиес играе наведнъж 7 различни роли!
В навечерието на Първата световна война, притиснат финансово от доминиращите големи холивудски студиа, Мелиес е принуден да обяви фалит. Той се пренасочва от правенето на филми към производството на детски играчки, и донякъде несъзнаващ стойността на собствените си творения, позволява голяма част от тях да бъдат унищожени – множество от филмите му не са стигнали до нас, защото са били рециклирани за нова лента, или претопени за направата на ботуши за френската армия.
По-късно, през 20-те и 30-те години следващото поколение кино-творци и в частност френските сюрреалисти започват да преоткриват филмите на Мелиес и да оценяват приноса му за развитието на седмото изкуство и му присъждат различни ордени и награди.
През 2002 година случайно откриват копие на филма в една плевня във френската провинция. Откритието е най-пълната версия на филма, съществуваща днес, но най-удивителното в случая е, че лентата е изцяло оцветена на ръка! Първата прожекция на реставрирания филм се състои през 2003.
Друг до скоро смятан за изгубен филм на Мелиес е един от ранните представители на филмите на ужасите - „Клеопатра” (1899), разказващ история за съживяването на мумията на египетската царица. Оцелял негатив бе открит във Франция през 2005.

15 SHORT FILMS
OK, so during my vacation my Short of the Week rubric got delayed, so I'm gonna make up for it and give you not one but 15 shorts today :)

15 is a short film anthology, produced by the Bulgarian newspaper "Capital" for its 15th anniversary.
Among them is "Omlette" by Nadejda Koseva. It won Honorable Mention of the Jury at the Sundance Film Festival.
I still haven't seen all of the shorts, but so far my favourite is the retro sci-fi documantary made for the year 2000 :)

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles SOLD!!
MTV Networks and it's Nickelodeon branch have bought the TMNT. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are no longer Mirage properties. Ex-owner and co-creator Peter Laird got himself 60 million bucks. The belief is currently that Mirage will disband entirely soon, but even if they don't they will move on to new things that have nothing to do with the Turtles, so it will be just the name "Mirage Studios" that stays - kinda like "Walt Disney" without Mickey Mouse.
This is not a rumor, Peter Laird confirmed the total sale of the TMNT - read all about it on his blog.
Well... what can I say guys... I feel totally weird right now.
I didn't imagine something like this will ever happen. I was always wondering why Kevin Eastman abandoned the Turtles. I didn't imagine that Pete will leave them behind as well...
Can you imagine George Lucas selling "Star Wars" for example?!
That was the greatest thing about Mirage and TMNT - independency and creative control over your own brainchild!!
Damn it, with all due respect, I really don't get it, why would you sell such a thing?! OK, if you're tired of it you can cast a team of creative people to go with it and you just supervise the whole process, meet once in a while with your team and discuss with them in what direction the Turtles should go...
But SELLING THEM?! Damn it, I would never ever do such a thing, especially with the work of my life, because honestly - 25 years you devoted to this thing!! How would you feel if now they just take it and ruin it and you can do nothing about it? I know that some crap things have come out in the past, like Venus de Milo & Next Mutation misunderstandings, so maybe you sorta know the feeling...
Now there's nothing left for us fans, except to hope that Nickleodeon will be up to the challenge not to disappoint us...

Lucky Luke is Back!
Days after I found out that the new Terence Hill western "Doc West" is on teh way, another exciting trailer is out! New Lucky Luke movie will premiere on October 21! Terence Hill was Lucky Luke in the movies and the TV series from the early 90s. This time Jean Dujadrin will portray the hero from the classic comic books by Morris & Goscinny. The weird thing is that he had a part in the previous Lucky Luke movie, "Les Dalton" from 2004... and he was not Lucky Luke there.

Vacation!!
Hey eveybody!
If you're wondering why there are no new posts lately - it's because I'm on a vacation :)
My State Exam was on 12 July, and seems like my writings on Jack London and Naturalism impressed somebody there, I guess I managed with the translations as well, cuz a week later I got a mail from my friend Ceko. He brought me the good news - I've got 6 (the Bulgarian equivalent of A)!
And I wasn't around to check the results myself, cuz right after the exam I started packing, and on 13th I got up at 5am, got on the train to Sofia, and from there on the bus to Poland (and a bonus stop at Prague - it was great to visit it again, even just for a while!)
I'm still out there, enjoying myself and having a great time :)
The net here's a bit slow, so I cant upload tons of photos right now, but if you want to see some - check me out on Facebook

"Дъга" - Разкази в Картинки
"Дъга! Ах, кой не я помни, кой не е слушал за нея! Това беше списанието, което показа що е то български комикс,
което носталгично се промъква в съзнанието на всеки, който е имал досег навремето с него – еталон за това на какво сме способни, че качествени и съпоставими със западните издания комикси могат да се правят и тук, в България.
Дълги години, много повече всъщност отколкото е бил периодът му на издаване, списанието съществува като икона и класически образец на българския комикс. Дъга се митологизира, изданието вече е истинска антикварна рядкост, и обикновено се разглежда извън времето – комиксите на настоящето, колкото и качествени да са, не могат да се мерят с героичното минало…
Това започна да става малко като анализ за изпит по литература, но е истина че това което беше Дъга, не може да се сравнява с нещата, които се правят сега. Всеки продукт трябва да се разглежда в собствения си контекст, а оригиналната Дъга… Може да се разглежда вече тук!"

Hoshi no Koe or Voices of a Distant Star was written, directed and produced entirely by Makoto on his Mac and released in 2002. Believe it or not, the only thing he didn't do on his own was the music (it's by Tenmon) and the voice dub.

Movies #25 - Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen
Почти съжалявам, че го гледах.
Най-добрата част от филма беше трейлъра на ICE AGE 3
Отчаяно се опитах да го харесам, но уви...
Transformers 2 е обида.
Американски Пай с големи роботи.
И в предния филм имаше моменти, които не бяха съвсем на място, но тук просто са прекалили. Така наречените "комични моменти" са предимно на сексуална тематика, а когато не са е дори по-зле...
История няма. Има нещо като зачатък на история. Освен, че част от героите са същите няма и връзка със събитията от първия филм.
За сметка на това има трансформър, който се трансформира на... човек?!... има кучешки секс, има още кучешки секс, има злоупотребила с марихуана дразнещо дбилна майка на главния герой, има дразнещо много реклама на величието на несломимата армия на съединените американски щати, президента Обама, робот с топки, дребен робот-перверзник извършващ специфични възвратно-постъпателни движения отърквайки се в крака на Megan Fox (която пък в тоя филм е толкова намазана, че ако си напише фамилията с още два хикс-а накрая и направо може да смени индустрията), има роботи с отрватителен латино акцент, gangsta роботи, псуващи роботи... Дали не беше по-добре и аз като Ixtiandur да бях дръпнал CAM-а с руския дублаж, вместо да си причиня всичко това като отидох на кино?
Господи, котано започнат да те дразнят РОБОТИТЕ във Transformers тогава нещата наистина са сериозни!
Майкъл Бей с арогантната си самоувереност и грандомания винаги ме е нервирал, но този път просто е надминал себе си. Самовлюбеното к**еле дори е вкарало плакат на собствения си BAD BOYS II във филма и го показва доста по-дълго от колкото доста от роботите!
И ако сте се питали дали са си взели поука и са вкарали култовата музикална тема на Трансформърс 2, след като по невъобразими причини не го бяха направили в първия филм - отговорът е НЕ!
Единственото, което може да спаси филма - да го преименуват на ILM Showreel / Hasbro Commercial и да оставят единствено ефекти и музика, без диалог, без актьори!!
Що се отнася до ефектите - те са горе-долу на нивото на първия филм, но леко в повече. От роботите Jetfire е изключително изпипан, адски готин дизайн и страхотно анимиран и озвучен. Вече, че Jetfire НИКОГА не е бил Десептикон, това са подробности...
Повечето от сцените сте ги виждали и в предишния филм почти същите, но тук поне не са рязани на половин секунда. Господи, дори имаше кадри от по 4-5 секунди!! Камерата, вярно, не седи мирна но поне не са го монтирали така че съвсем да не виждаш какво става. Има няколко красиви сцени с Оптимус, трансформацията на конструктикона е доста ефектна, и взривяването на самолетоносача определено си заслужава да се види.
Най-лошото е, че при все разочарованието филмът прави маса пари и е почти сигурно, че ще изкарат и трета част...

It's been a while since I posted about a favourite artist. I ordered another Dinotopia book today on eBay so it reminded me that I should say a few words about one of my favourite illustrators - James Gurney, the creator of Dinotopia
His detailed paintings, distinctive style and vivid imagination have brought dinosaurs back to life in one ofthe most astonishing fictional worlds, my dream-home, the island of Dinotopia.
Besides the four illustrated albums by Gurney, there are also series of novels (by authors such as Alan Dean Foster), mini-series, 13 TV episodes and an animated movie by Hallmark, and some card and video games as well.In Bulgaria only two of the books have been published - Gurney's fourth illustrated masterpiece - "Dinotopia: Journey to Chandara", and Alan Dean Foster's novel "Dinotopia Lost"

The greatest antropomorphic characters to hit the screen since the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! The Biker Mice from Mars are one of the best cartoons ever, too bad that only the 1st season is available... the 2nd and the 3rd one are extremely hard to find!
The new Biker Mice from Mars series are far from the glory of the old show, but it's better than nothing. Some of the episodes are really disappointing and the quality of the animation is far below average in some of the scenes. Still the show has its moments, and it's great to have the Mice back again!

Най-доброто от рубриката му, излъчвана в "Лека нощ, деца" по БНТ, може да се види в Дома на киното. Входът е свободен
Ако сте родени в началото на 70-те - и сте имали телевизор у дома, - няма как да не помните рубриката "Климент пее и рисува", излъчвана в минутките за "Лека нощ, деца" по БНТ.
В тези уникални филмчета Климент Денчев разказва приказки, като едновременно ги илюстрира с боички върху стъкло .
Няколко от тях ще бъдат показани на голям екран в Дома на киното в памет на актьора , който почина в Канада през март, месец преди да навърши 70.
Входът за прожекциите на тези истински съкровища от фонда на държавната телевизия е свободен - с покана, която всеки може да си изтегли от www.filmmakersbg.org/news-bg, сайта на Съюза на българските филмови дейци (СБФД).
Първата от тези истории е "Тигърчето Спас" (1969 г.), което тръгнало на разходка из гората.
От 1974 г. са приказката за слънцето и вятъра "Кой е най-силният" и "Пътят", който се обидил, че е винаги кален и прашен, че автомобили, трактори и камиони непрекъснато го тъпчели и ядосвали - и един ден тръгнал да търси щастието по големия свят...
В "Антарктида" (1975 г.) Бате Климбо разказва за малко момче, което се качило на самолет и отпътувало към ледения континент, за да яде сладолед до насита.
Трите са детски поеми от сборника на Стефан Цанев "Анини приказки". Изданието им от 1976 г. е илюстрирано тъкмо от Климент Денчев.
Последният по хронология е "Магарешки работи" (1979 г.) - 9-минутен негов анимационен филм по Марко Ганчев в съавторство с Лъчезар Иванов.
Това е историята за едно магаре, което се присмива на зебрата и жирафа, че са по пижами - и си умира от смях.
Накрая взема на подбив и тигъра, но това се оказва фатално за него...
Подобно предаване - "Вълшебства на стъкло", през последните години води по телевизия М-Сат актьорът от Варненския куклен театър (VnPuppet.com) Христо Колев
И тъй като училищната ваканция вече започна, в Дома на киното (вж. програмата в Kino.gbg.bg) пускат и още няколко детски филма за по-малки и по-големи.

ЧРД, Доналд! И честит юбилей!
Патокът Доналд стана на 75!
Макар годините да не му личат, Доналд всъщност се появява за пръв път на екрана именно на 9 юни през 1934 г. в късометражното филмче "Мъдрата малка кокошка"
Един от най-любимите герои на малки и големи, патокът Доналд, празнува 75-ия си рожден ден на 9 юни.
Макар годините да не му личат, Доналд всъщност се появява за пръв път именно на тази дата през 1934 г. в късометражното филмче The Wise Little Hen (Мъдрата малка кокошка).
В него се разказва за малка кокошка, която търси помощ, за да засее цяла нива с царевица, а нейният съсед - в ролята Доналд, прави всичко възможно да се спаси от работата.
Минават обаче още три години, преди Доналд да стане главен герой на собствена серия анимационни филми през 1937 г. Тогава към него на екрана се присъединяват и племенниците му Хюи, Луи и Дюи, както и любимата на Доналд - Дейзи.
През 1947 г. се появява и неприлично богатият, но и безбожно стиснат Чичо Скрудж и неговият всеизвестен девиз: "По-добре богат и здрав, отколкото беден и болен".
Доналд всъщност е много мил и винаги има добри намерения, които обаче често минават на заден план, изместени от недотам благородни каузи. За своите 75 години е сменил стотици професии, като нито една не му се отдава особено, и винаги е без пукната стотинка в джоба.
Обикновено се разхожда с моряшка фланелка, шапка и червена или черна папионка, освен когато плува - тогава носи бански.
Уолт Дисни създава Доналд като противоположност на винаги безукорният Мики Маус (който също имаше юбилей в края на 2008 г.). И все пак именно неговите недостатъци и бурният му темперамент му печелят изключителна популярност и всъщност за него са направени повече анимационни филма отколкото за Мики Маус. Те са точно 128 без да броим появяванията му във филми за други герои - Мики Маус, Плуто и Динго.
Още нещо, което знаят малко хора - второто име на Доналд е Фаунтлерой. Тайната е издадена в едно филмче от 1942 г.

In Memoriam - David Carradine
Cult actor David Carradine is no longer among us. I grew up watching "Kung-Fu" and he is in plenty of my favourite movies...
On June 4, 2009, Carradine was found dead in his room at the Swissotel Nai Lert Park Hotel on Wireless Road, near Sukhumwit, in central Bangkok, Thailand. The initial police report indicated that Carradine had committed suicide by hanging himself; he was found by a hotel maid sitting in a wardrobe with a cord around his neck and body. Carradine was in Bangkok to shoot his latest movie, Stretch, but the film crew were aware of his absence when they went to dine out at a restaurant on June 3.
It's really a sad end...
I have no idea what happened, and if it's really a suicide what have pushed him to commit it. Maybe it's just a grim coincidence, but one of his last roles in a movie, called My Suicide

I just saw the two Ringo movies with Giuliano Gemma - "Una Pistola Per Ringo" and "Il Ritorno di Ringo". And I couldn't resist but post some of Ennio Morricone's magnificent music for these classic spaghetti westerns. Enjoy!

Жалко, че няма и версията на Канал 1 от сериала, там предова е по-различен и също доста сполучлив.

Happy 70th Anniversary, Batman!
Probably it's not the exact date on which "Detective Comics" #27 was published, back in May 1939 - the very first appearance of my all-time favourite comic book super hero, Batman. But because of the number of the issue my bro decided that we should celebrate today :)
When I got back from work he had already turned the living room into a bat-cave and after dinner we watched a documentary on Batman's history, followed by one of my favourite episodes of "Batman: The Animated Series" - Beware The Gray Ghost! And then bro blew the candles and we had a piece of bat-cake :) (the photos from our celebration will be soon up on Realm of the Bat )

Poster of the Week #19 & 20
Albert Pyun is one of my favourite B-movie directors, which is not surprising since I have a passion for postapocalyptic flicks. But except kickbox and cyborgs he's done some fantasy too - actually he started his career with "The Sword and The Sorcerer" (1982)
The second poster is by Peter Andrew Jones, a renowned illustrator and cover artist - take a look at some of his works
The news is that Pyun is just about to release a sequel to "The Sword and the Sorcerer", titled "Tales of an Ancient Empire", starring Christopher "The Highlander" Lambert and Kevin "Hercules" Sorbo. Hopefully it will be enjoyable. Hopefully...

My all-time favourite Batman on screen is the classic WB Batman The Animated Series from the 90s, but that doesn't mean that I don't like the rest of the interpretatons. Currently the kid-friendly retro-take on teh character in "Batman - The Brave and The Bold" is really entertaining and amusing.
But what I feel like posting today are the openings of "The Batman". Great ne look with Jeff Matsuda's character designs and awesome opening theme composed and performed by non other but The Edge from U2
With Robin and Batgirl on board for the next seasons, the tone of the series got lighter, the theme more enegretic and slightly James Bondish
And here's what The Edge has to say about his involvement on The Batman

Ray Bradbury's Bulgarian Bibliography - The Storyteller throughout the years
“The Americans call him “The Great Moralist”. Which Americans? Because after all it was the Americans who set his home in Los Angeles on fire a couple of years ago, furious because of his merciless satire against their “Greatest Society” – this is how Venko Hristov began his afterwords of “Hail and Farewell” in 1974. Americans set Ray Bradbury’s home on fire?! Then he’s a real prophet, “Fahrenheit 451” is actually happening!
Or is it? After I searched on the net quite a lot I could not find any information on such an event! It is no wonder that back in those days the political propaganda on our side (and not only) was way over the top. But is it possible that they not only did their best to present the works of the translated western writers as anti-capitalistic satire, but they even added some imaginary facts to the biographies in order to create some communistic guerilla halo around them?! Imagine poor Ray Bradbury, chased out of his home in LA by a crowd of angry Americans armed with pitchforks and torches!
Venko Hristov goes on with some more harsh anti-USA pathos, and he even gets Lenin involved, claiming that Bradbury clearly has “a system of positive ideals” and his works have “their own moral, philosophical and social charge”.
And it gets me thinking, “Geez, if he goes one step farther he will say that Ray Bradbury is actually from the USSR!” Then I read the next line and I start laughing: “It wouldn’t take much more for us to say that Bradbury is “OURS!”. Well, Hristov didin’t go that far, instead he pitied Bradbury for being “class restricted” – the unfortunate writer is unable to grasp the real deal and fully develop his talent in that decadent western society.
Among the propaganda and the criticism of the West, Hristov still praises Bradbury’s style and admits the value of his stories. He calls his language “easy to understand for the general mass of readers”, but still “provoking intellectual and aesthetic tension”. “His protagonists” – Hristov claims – “are common men from the people, uncorrupted by the capitalistic social structure.”
Towards the end Hristov asks himself if Bradbury actually realizes that he is a supporter of the Socialistic ideology or not, and if the anti-capitalistic messages in his stories are consciously put there. He says that whatever the answer is, the result is what really matters – “the whole lifework of the great science fiction writer (who is actually a realist) carries one continuing idea – the world of the capital is degenerate and doomed, it has to go away and make place for a more humane, more sensible, happier way of life”.
I have no idea if this Venko Hristov actually believes in what he wrote, or it was just an unpleasant necessity, so the translation can pass some Commie Commission and get a permission to be published.
Years later, 1981, George Markovski’s preface of “The Halloween Tree” begins with the very same words: “The Americans call him “The Great Moralist”. Fortunately here the propaganda is brought down to a minimum. Probably it was the personal and abstract nature of the book which allowed on the preface to focus on Bradbury’s personality and childhood inspirations, instead on his political ideas and the social criticism of his works. The result is a much closer and warmer insight on Bradbury and his interests. In the preface Markovski also makes use of the famous Bradbury quote: “Jules Verne was my father. H.G. Wells was my wise uncle. Poe was the batwinged cousin we kept in the attic. Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers were my brothers. And Mary Shelley was my mother. There you have my ancestry” (though I’m not sure if back in those days the Bulgarian readers were familiar with Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers… even now many people have no idea about them)
1982’s edition of “Fahrenheit 451” contains a preface by Dimitry Ivanov. He concentrates on facts from Bradbury’s biography, bibliography and filmography. Ivanov describes Bradbury’s stories as “steeped in loneliness and sad, unostentatious irony” and calls him “a romanticist from the American prairie … emotionally engaged in the dilemma of scientific progress against humanistic tradition”. But he then switches to the political aspect again - “But where do you see Bradbury talking about politics? On what basis you turn his literary portrait into a political comment? – they ask” (yup, and I ask the same). Ivanov mentions again that Ray Bradbury’s home was set on fire, but he gives us some “details” about it – it was “burned down by a storm team of the reactionary organization called “The John Birch Society”. Again I search on the net, such a society surely exists ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Birch_Society ) and their ideas seem to fit the story (the society supports traditionally conservative causes such as anti-communism), but still I couldn’t find any information about them (or anybody else) burning down Ray Bradbury’s house. Besides this paragraph Dimitry Ivanov’s preface focuses on Bradbury as a storyteller, on his personality and the characteristic features of his stories. Ivanov calls Bradbury a visionary, compares his stories and the metaphors he uses to the traditions of Ancient Greek mythology, classical fairy tales such as “1001 Nights” and dark gothic fiction. He praises Bradbury for his humanity and love for mankind.
Svetoslav Slavchev is one of the most renowned Bulgarian sci-fi (and comic book) writers as well as one of the editors of the famous “Library Galactica” science fiction book series. He compiled a collection of stories titled “Sound of Thunder”, which was published in 1986, and also wrote the preface to it, titled “Bradbury with the many faces”. Slavchev pays attention to the wide variety of themes and topics throughout Bradbury’s stories. He underlines the “nostalgic sorrow which almost always colors his plots” and that this “nostalgia often grows into a denial of progress”. Of course, again we have some political aspect to the preface, even not so strong as in the previous two. Slavchev says that Bradbury criticizes “his society … driven by greed … where human relations are absurdly deformed.” Well, Bradbury really does that, but it’s not HIS society in particular that he criticizes, his ideas are universal and can be applied to literally any society, any form of authority and any political regime. The final paragraph categorize Bradbury as a humanist writer who is “against the fake moral of a fake society”, but still Slavchev does not name this society in a straightforward way.
Two decades after we have abolished communism the publishers have finally decided to let Ray Bradbury speak for himself. In the 2008 translation of 100 Разказа (The Stories of Ray Bradbury, 1980) we have a preface not by the translator or the editor, but by the author - http://www.chitanka.info:82/lib/text/10292

Or is it? After I searched on the net quite a lot I could not find any information on such an event! It is no wonder that back in those days the political propaganda on our side (and not only) was way over the top. But is it possible that they not only did their best to present the works of the translated western writers as anti-capitalistic satire, but they even added some imaginary facts to the biographies in order to create some communistic guerilla halo around them?! Imagine poor Ray Bradbury, chased out of his home in LA by a crowd of angry Americans armed with pitchforks and torches!
Venko Hristov goes on with some more harsh anti-USA pathos, and he even gets Lenin involved, claiming that Bradbury clearly has “a system of positive ideals” and his works have “their own moral, philosophical and social charge”.
And it gets me thinking, “Geez, if he goes one step farther he will say that Ray Bradbury is actually from the USSR!” Then I read the next line and I start laughing: “It wouldn’t take much more for us to say that Bradbury is “OURS!”. Well, Hristov didin’t go that far, instead he pitied Bradbury for being “class restricted” – the unfortunate writer is unable to grasp the real deal and fully develop his talent in that decadent western society.
Among the propaganda and the criticism of the West, Hristov still praises Bradbury’s style and admits the value of his stories. He calls his language “easy to understand for the general mass of readers”, but still “provoking intellectual and aesthetic tension”. “His protagonists” – Hristov claims – “are common men from the people, uncorrupted by the capitalistic social structure.”
Towards the end Hristov asks himself if Bradbury actually realizes that he is a supporter of the Socialistic ideology or not, and if the anti-capitalistic messages in his stories are consciously put there. He says that whatever the answer is, the result is what really matters – “the whole lifework of the great science fiction writer (who is actually a realist) carries one continuing idea – the world of the capital is degenerate and doomed, it has to go away and make place for a more humane, more sensible, happier way of life”.
I have no idea if this Venko Hristov actually believes in what he wrote, or it was just an unpleasant necessity, so the translation can pass some Commie Commission and get a permission to be published.
Years later, 1981, George Markovski’s preface of “The Halloween Tree” begins with the very same words: “The Americans call him “The Great Moralist”. Fortunately here the propaganda is brought down to a minimum. Probably it was the personal and abstract nature of the book which allowed on the preface to focus on Bradbury’s personality and childhood inspirations, instead on his political ideas and the social criticism of his works. The result is a much closer and warmer insight on Bradbury and his interests. In the preface Markovski also makes use of the famous Bradbury quote: “Jules Verne was my father. H.G. Wells was my wise uncle. Poe was the batwinged cousin we kept in the attic. Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers were my brothers. And Mary Shelley was my mother. There you have my ancestry” (though I’m not sure if back in those days the Bulgarian readers were familiar with Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers… even now many people have no idea about them)

Ivanov describes Bradbury’s stories as “steeped in loneliness and sad, unostentatious irony” and calls him “a romanticist from the American prairie … emotionally engaged in the dilemma of scientific progress against humanistic tradition”. But he then switches to the political aspect again - “But where do you see Bradbury talking about politics? On what basis you turn his literary portrait into a political comment? – they ask” (yup, and I ask the same). Ivanov mentions again that Ray Bradbury’s home was set on fire, but he gives us some “details” about it – it was “burned down by a storm team of the reactionary organization called “The John Birch Society”. Again I search on the net, such a society surely exists ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Birch_Society ) and their ideas seem to fit the story (the society supports traditionally conservative causes such as anti-communism), but still I couldn’t find any information about them (or anybody else) burning down Ray Bradbury’s house. Besides this paragraph Dimitry Ivanov’s preface focuses on Bradbury as a storyteller, on his personality and the characteristic features of his stories. From Books to Films – A Liberating and Democratic Experience
Being the Seventh Art Cinema usually borrows elements from the previous six arts and blends them together creating a new kind of experience. Art number six, poetry and literature, often serves as an inspiration and provides a narrative to be visually interpreted and represented on screen. Since the dawn of Cinema, books have been recreated on film.
Some prefer to stick to the paper, seeing someone else’s vision of his favourite story and beloved characters on screen can bring disappointment. Many movies based on works of literature are bombed by the readers for “not staying true to the book” or “deviating from the author’s vision”.
And some find this new way of presenting the books as a breath of fresh air, something new and interesting, a liberating and democratic experience.
I support the last point of view.
But before I support my choice and illustrate it with some examples, let’s define what liberty is and what democracy is.
Liberty - the condition in which an individual has the ability to act according to his or her own will.
Democracy is a form of government in which state-power is held by the majority of citizens within a country or a state.
So whether liberty and democracy are identical or confronting ideas depends entirely on the individual. Are you part of the majority? Do you agree with their decisions or you are obligated to obey the authority against your will?
The word “democracy” itself is derived from the Greek δημοκρατία (dēmokratía), which means "popular government". So if we apply this term to books and films, then everything pop-culture is democratic. The bestsellers and the blockbusters are what readers and audience “voted for”.
But on the other hand you don’t have to agree with the general audience, you don’t have to read what the critics say about this or that title. You are free to decide what to read and what to watch; you follow your own taste and choose the titles for yourself. So it’s not only democratic, but liberating as well.
Is it the same with the mix of cinema and literature? I think yes. A new treatment of a story, a new point of view, re-imagine and recreate somebody’s work in a new format – if this is not liberating I don’t know what is.
Let’s look at Tim Burton’s interpretation of Roald Dahl’s celebrated novel “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”. Burton is the perfect choice to bring to life the words from the pages and turn them into moving pictures. Not only did he stay true to the story and captured all of its bizarre and dark atmosphere, but he also added a whole new layer to it. Willy Wonka’s back-story was never written by Dahl, but Tim Burton's 2005 version added a history of the character: Willy Wonka (played by Johnny Depp) is the son of dentist Dr. Wilbur Wonka (played by Christopher Lee). Wonka had a traumatic childhood: his father forbade him to eat candy and forced his son to wear large and unsightly orthodontic headgear. Eventually, he tastes chocolate and starts getting ideas for other candies. When he becomes an adult, Wonka opens his own candy store, with Grandpa Joe being one of Wonka's first employees. It’s a brilliant addition and it gives a dramatic depth to the one-dimensional character that Dahl created.
Another good example is Frank Darabont’s movie “The Mist” based on Stephen King’s novella of the same name. After the amazing “The Shawshank Redemption” and “The Green Mile” Darabont is a real expert on filming Stephen King’s stories. In the novella King left his characters driving through the mist. Darabont conceived of a new ending in translating the novella for the big screen. The ending surely is a shocker, and after he saw the movie Stephen King himself praised it: “Frank wrote a new ending that I loved. It is the most shocking ending ever and there should be a law passed stating that anybody who reveals the last 5 minutes of this film should be hung from their neck until dead.” (Actually I was about to retell the ending, but it would be cruel of me if you haven’t seen the movie yet… and by the way I’m afraid that Stephen King might hunt me down and hang me!)
Also one of my personal favorites is Disney’s “Treasure Planet” - a science fiction adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's adventure novel “Treasure Island”. Writer Rob Edwards stated that "it was extremely challenging" to take a classic novel and set it in outer space, and that they did away with some of the science fiction elements ("things like the metal space ships and the coldness") early on. Co-director John Musker explains “We wanted people to breathe in space rather than have helmets and space suits, which would take all the romance out of it. We wanted to keep the lyrical quality of the original”. For the characterization and design for Jim Hawkins, John Ripa cited James Dean as an important reference because "there was a whole attitude, a posture" wherein "you felt the pain and the youthful innocence". I find it truly incredible, what a crew of talented and creative people can do with a given story and how they contribute to the original vision of the author.
However, recreating somebody else’s creation is a risky endeavor and it takes a lot of responsibility. Quite often turning books into films can be a real disaster. And in case you watch the movie first your experience with the book can be greatly spoiled – as the saying goes, “Read it before Hollywood does!” Whether parts of the book are left out for the sake of timing and pace, actors bring a different approach on a favourite character or moviemakers just fail to translate the literary source on screen – the film experience can be dissatisfying… or even painful. (you just try and watch “Screamers 2” or “Starship Troopers 3”, I dare ya!)
But the good thing is that even if the film adaptation is plain awful you can just ignore its existence. Try to wash away the bad taste and forget you ever saw it.
Like it or not, the border between books and movies will continue to get crossed. It’s a liberating and democratic process it which filmmakers become co-authors along with the book writers and bring the original story to a new realm of storytelling.
